Lt. Col. Ron Speir, of the Georgia Air National Guard's 117th Air Control Squadron, has relinquished command at Hunter Army Airfield.

The Savannah native joined the unit almost 30 years ago and he's served as commander for the last three.

Lt. Col. Elizabeth Baker will now assume command.

Speir says it's hard to leave the group, but he has so many cherished memories to take with him.

"One of the most amazing things was how we were one of the first guard units called up after 9/11. After serving three months overseas in Kuwait, our first day back at work was 9/11 and we immediately answered the call and we were sending our rare information to the North American Air Defense sector. And within a few days, we were defending Atlanta. And that's what being a citizen soldier is about,” said Lt. Col. Speir.

He is now heading to the Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, where he will serve as the deputy director of the Georgia Department of Defense's Human Resources Office.
