BURTON, SC (WTOC) -

A fire involving a large debris pile kept area firefighters in Burton engaged for several hours on Sunday evening.

Crews from the Burton Fire District responded to the scene at Pro Disposal on Bay Pines Road shorty after 4:15 p.m. to find heavy volumes of fire rapidly spreading across a large continuous pile of timber and trees.

Upon arrival, fire crews from Sheldon and the Marine Corps Air Station were also called for assistance.

Officials say the extensive fire was deep seated in the pile of wood, which made it difficult for firefighters to reach; The fire extended over 300 yards long, 30 feet wide, and 20 feet high.

After over four hours of fighting, firefighters had to use a front end loader to break the pile apart in order to reach the deep seated areas of flames.

Although the flames were eventually extinguished, fire officials say they expect for the pile to continue smoldering due to the inability to reach the deepest pockets of still smoldering wood within the pile. Burton fire crews will continue to monitor the area.

No injuries were reported.
