The staff at Fort McAllister State Historic Park is looking for answers after their unofficial mascot and a baby deer were shot and killed.

Rangers were accustomed to seeing "Geechee" the cat around the grounds. She even greeted them as they opened the office.

But she was found badly injured after being shot Monday. She later died.

"It's really horrifying to think that the damage that was done to her, that none of us were really given the opportunity to see her in her damaged state. But that's probably the best thing, to remember her as she was, a sweet cat that she was instead of what happened to her,” Fort McAllister’s Interpretive Ranger Trevor Johnston said.

Park employees believe whoever is responsible committed the crimes early Sunday morning.

There is now a $550 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
