Midway Firefighter Arrested on Murder Charges

Liberty County residents are still talking about the county's first murder of the year, involving a volunteer firefighter from Midway. Police say Calvin Chipp shot and killed a man outside the Sky Box Bar early Saturday morning. Midway's fire chief says the fire department is still in disbelief.

Calvin Chipp's boots and fire gear are still sitting on the floor of the Midway Fire Department. Friday afternoon, he was even fighting a house fire.

"He eagerly jumped out, grabbed the hose and started putting out the fire," explained Midway Fire Chief Nicole Horton.

Early Saturday morning, the fire department got another call to support the LifeStar helicopter.

"We landed LifeStar around two in the morning for a victim who was shot at the Sky Box Lounge," said Horton. "At the time I had no idea one of my firefighters was involved in the shooting."

Chief Horton later learned Calvin Chipp had been arrested for the shooting death of 18-year-old Roger Harrell. Liberty County Sheriff's deputies say Chipp and Harrell got into an argument at the bar. The two argued for a while before deputies say Chipp went to his car, pulled out an A-K 47 assault rifle and shot Harrell in the chest and leg. Harrell died on his way to the hospital.

"I was in disbelief," Horton added. "I did not think it was true. I was very, very shocked."

The news stunned everyone in the quiet town. Horton says Chipp was one of the most involved volunteer firefighters in the department.

"He's a great firefighter," she said. "He was always helping people. This is just not like him."

As of now, Horton says she doesn't know the status of Chipp's position with the fire department. They will have to wait for his arraignment on Monday. Chipp is being held in the Liberty County Jail.
