A Coastal Georgia non-profit that strives to make people more comfortable in the end stages of life is in need of volunteers.

Medicare requires 5 percent of direct care services provided by non-profits like Hospice Savannah to come from volunteers.

For that reason, every other month Hospice Savannah looks for people wanting to volunteer their time to the service. The next training date is July 11.

“The best volunteers are those who have been in this situation themselves, who have perhaps used a hospice in another community, or in our community, and see the benefit of having a helpful person to just come in and be a companion to the patient for a while, or a friend to the family for a while,” said Beth Logan, Marketing and Volunteer Service for Hospice Savannah.

Hospice Savannah vets volunteers by checking references, and conducting health and criminal background screenings. They serve patients throughout Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty and Long counties.
