WAYNE CO., GA (WTOC) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Highway 341 just inside the Wayne County line on Friday.
Around 2 p.m., Appling County Sheriff's deputies were chasing a motorcycle driven by 23-year-old Mathew Jared Schantz for a traffic violation. Schantz traveled across the county line before eventually turning around and heading back in the direction of Appling County, according to police.
While traveling on Hwy 341, Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach shot at, and hit, Schantz while he was traveling toward the sheriff, according to police.
As a result, Schantz crashed the motorcycle. He was airlifted to the hospital. He is in stable condition.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office for review.
