CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department took part in a 32-hour training course on Monday from the International Police Mount Bike Association.

The course teaches officers all about how to be safe on the bikes. It also teaches them - through obstacle courses - how to keep their balance in small spaces, how to maneuver in large crowds and even how to avoid getting hit by a car.

Organizers say this is just another valuable resource at the department's disposal.

"It's extremely important because it allows them to operate out in public and it helps us integrate the bicycles with the community oriented policing paradigm. That way we can come out, interact with the community and be very accessible to them. It's a more approachable stance versus an officer being in a police car,” said Cpl. Matthew Lopresti, SCMPD.

SCMPD say the officers on bicycles can also help those in the community with safety tips and bicycle maintenance as well.
