STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Some overdue credit for law officers who helped take down identity thieves.

The FBI recently recognized Captain James Winskie of Statesboro Police, and two federal officers who started the case three years ago.  We took you along back then when agents made the arrests.

They cuffed dozens of people they said stole names and information and filed false tax returns to steal collective millions in fake refunds.

"If I'm proud of this, it's on behalf of the victims. They're the ones who went through so much to get their lives back and what they went through in having their identity stolen,” said Capt. Winskie.

The FBI also recognized Gwen Weston of the IRS and Lamont Belk of the US Attorney's Office.
