Mother of I-16 crash victim speaks out

Devon Mobley. Devon Mobley.

We are learning more about what led to Wednesday's deadly crash on Interstate 16.

Five people lost their lives in a two car wreck. In an exclusive interview, the mother of one of the victims spoke to WTOC's Dal Cannady, and he brings us the heartbreaking story.

More people in Claxton knew Devon Mobley by his basketball nickname “Pistol”.

His mother says she spoke with him, and the driver, just minutes before this tragedy.

Pistol and two co-workers Arney Douglas and Willie Braggs, had driven back all night from a moving job in Virginia when he called his mom early Wednesday morning.

"He said Arney was getting drowsy and he was about to have a car accident,” said Dot Mobley, crash victim’s mom.

Mobley said her son passed the phone to Douglas.

"I asked him to please pull over and stop at a rest area,” she said.

The crash happened an hour or so later. Mobley says she would caution drivers -of cars or big trucks - who spend long hours behind the wheel.

"My advice to drivers would be to get plenty of rest and consider other people's lives as valuable as you would consider yours," said Mobley.

With no insurance, the family is accepting a collection to help cover the funeral expenses. When that gets finalized, we'll let you know as well as the funeral arrangements.

Visitation for Arney Douglas will be June 28, from noon to 6 p.m. at Moody's Funeral Home. The funeral will be immediately following the visitation at the First African Baptist Church in Claxton.
