SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Dozens gathered at the Chatham County Courthouse Friday for the 5th annual reading of the Declaration of Independence.

"These people who come down and participate in this, they all enjoy it and they appreciate what they're doing," said Tom Freeman, WWII Veteran.

Many recognizable faces were in the crowd including Savannah's mayor along with Chatham County's district attorney and sheriff.

"We are all just people in this nation.  Every man is created equal," said Doug Andrews, president of Savannah Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Andrews led the event.  He hopes everyone remembers what this holiday weekend is truly all about.

"We need to remember those who are serving now and won't be at our barbeques," he said. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is what this nation was founded on with respect for our creator."

After the reading, Leopold's helped cool off the crowd with some ice cream.
