SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Local church leaders are learning about abuse prevention.

Representatives from 52 Savannah-area churches are attending the week-long session hosted by the Berean Congress of Christian Education.

The director of the Rape Crisis Center detailed a few things their organization will go over - like the importance of background checks for anyone working with children - and educating the congregation about risk factors that can lead to sexual abuse.

"Even in our churches, there are background checks on these persons who are dealing with our young people. So that's a precautionary measure that we're taking to make sure that those who are working with our children, which we are comfortable with them and we know about them,” said Rev. Clarence Williams.

The alternative can be a financial disaster as well. Just last week, the Catholic Diocese of Savannah agreed to pay $4.5 million in a settlement for a priest abuse lawsuit filed last year.
