Hilton Head public Safety Committee addressing lockout unit concerns

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Hilton Head's Public Safety Committee decided to address the longtime concern over lockout units.

They are single apartments divided and rented out as two or three units.

Residents of Oceanwalk Villas in South Forest Beach say the apartments are problematic for fulltime residents, causing overcrowding and safety hazards.

Monday, the chairman finally decided the city will intervene.

"At this time we had so many people come and complain about public safety issues. So we're trying to address those public safety issues. But at the same time, we're not trying to be overbearing. But what we want to do is work with the board and see if we can come up with ways they can improve," said HHI Public Safety Committee Chairman Marc Grant.

This issue will now be brought to Hilton Head Town Council at its next meeting, July 19.
