BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) -

Neighbors aren’t happy after a developer proposes an idea to bring in a new business and industry to Southern Bulloch County.

A county zoning meeting will be Thursday night to discuss further details.

The Planning and Zoning Committee will decide if they’ll recommend thousands of acres along Hwy 67 to be developed into a light industry park.

The category “light industry” doesn’t mean smokestacks and factories, but according to the county zoning ordinance, it could include anything from a bed and breakfast to a salvage yard.

The tracts on both sides of the highway total more than 4,000 acres. A mega site with warehouses, repair shops and more could bring in new jobs. However, neighbors are rallying on social media to oppose the plan because it will increase traffic and increase demand on local water supplies.

The County Manager Tom Couch, says both sides will be able to bring their points before the committee.

“Basically prevent their development plan. They’ll be able to discuss in outreach with the public that’s there. And, because it’s a public hearing, they’ll get input from the people who are there. They’ll be allowed to talk,” said Couch.

The committee can only recommend for or against the plan and the final decision comes from the county commissioners.

The committee can do one of several things Thursday night. Since the developer requested a deferral for 30 days, they can allow them to bring back more data to answer any questions the committee still has. They also can decide yes or no on the spot and pass the issue onto county commissioners.
