Expansion plans approved for Splash in the Boro

Splash in the Boro started more than a decade ago as something for locals to do instead of going out of town.

It has become one of the surprise tourist attractions in Southeast Georgia. Now a plan to expand could make it even more popular.

Summertime brings Jacklyn Tanner and her family from Savannah to Splash in the Boro, over and over again.

“My grandbaby can't stay out of the water so we keep coming back. It's a very nice park,” said Tanner.

She's not alone. Last year, Splash hosted roughly 140,000 visitors - twice the population of Bulloch County itself.

Some weekends, they hit capacity and can't allow another person in until someone goes home.

County commissioners just gave permission for the recreation department to expand with a wave pool, a bigger entrance and more.

“This will add another 700 to the capacity of our park. Not only that, wave pools are a huge attraction for any water park. It is probably the top attraction at water parks that folks look for,” said Mike Rollins, Bulloch County Parks and Recreation.

They expect the cost to top $5.5 million. But they bring in enough money to quickly repay the bonds they'll use to pay for the project. If it brings even more people, they can pay it off even sooner.

The news has some visitors already making plans.

“Oh yes! We'll be back even more because I love wave pools,” said Faith Claxton, from Hazlehurst.

Rollins says the whole idea is keeping the park new by adding something that makes people want to keep coming back.
