Beaufort is going Hollywood!

There hasn’t been a movie shot in the area in over 15 years, but now that’s about to change and feature a local furry face.

There was a special doggie casting call on Sunday for a new Lowcountry movie.

Lights. Camera. Dog?

Well over 100 dogs and their owners lined the streets, ready for their close-up at the Port Royal Veterinary Hospital. All were hoping for their dog’s chance at Hollywood stardom from a role in the new movie “Basement Bob”.

“It went great, it went great,” said Greg Rawls. “Oliver is a rescue dog, came from a shelter in Charleston. But he had a good time. He loves to get his picture taken and loves to mug for the camera. He’s a good boy.”

This movie isn’t just a dog’s big break; it’s one for Beaufort too. It’s a chance to get back into the film industry.

“I’ve heard so many fun stories from people that were here when other movies have been made, and I think that this is the first step back in that direction,” said Port Royal Veterinary Hospital’s Marikay Campbell.

The Woods Memorial Bridge is part of one of the most iconic movie scenes in Beaufort County history, the scene where Tom Hanks runs across it as Forrest Gump. But according to the Beaufort Library, the last time the town was featured in a film was about 15 years ago, and a big reason for that unplanned hiatus are tax incentives offered by other states to get filmmakers to work there.

“It allowed studios to go to other states to produce movies versus shooting here in South Carolina,” said “Basement Bob” producer Uyen Le. “South Carolina does have a film incentive, however, it attracts movies that have a budget of a million dollars or over. And independent film projects don’t necessarily make that cut.”

But they say every dog has its day, and now the town will too. The entire movie will be filmed this fall, right here in Beaufort.
