SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An open house is being held to talk about Chatham County's new flood hazard maps.

The open house centers on the recent countywide Flood Insurance Study.

Engineers and representatives from FEMA are here to explain the new preliminary flood hazard maps for Chatham County. You can come and learn how the proposed maps can affect building and flood insurance requirements, as well as get tips to protect your property from potential flood damage.

It's essentially a one-stop-shop to meet with different experts across the spectrum of the process of creating these new flood maps.

Engineers, representatives from FEMA and insurance experts are here to explain what this means for your property, as well as some tips for protecting your property from potential flood damage.

These new flood maps are more detailed and accurate than the older county maps.

"Because we can identify where the risk is, we can assess what level risk it's going to be, and through the media and television, we're able to communicate with individuals as far as what is their risk and getting that information out. It could be changing from the old maps to the new maps. It could be changing from a high risk to a low risk, which is great news for them and a decrease in flood insurance rates,” said Tom Shillock, FEMA.

If your property is affected by the change, it's possible you may be able to reduce your future insurance costs.

Those officials will be here to answer questions until 7:30 p.m. at the Eckburg Auditorium on the Savannah Tech Campus.
