SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah city officials are still trying to figure out how to fix a multi-million dollar deficit to the city's Water and Sewer Fund for 2016.

Mayor Eddie DeLoach and other council members brought up their concerns about the continuing effort to build the cash balance in the Water and Sewer Fund at Thursday's work session.

Because of problems with the collection process, the fund has about $12.5 million less than it did this time last year.

City Manager Stephanie Cutter said even though there are problems with the existing collection process, that there's no turning back and they have to make it work.

"If they know what they're going to do, if this doesn't happen, they have a contingency plan and we have money in place that we can draw off of until it does catch up. But I would rather them tell me about how they're going to catch up before the end of the year, not that we have to put a plan in place," Mayor DeLoach said.

Mayor DeLoach said he will be communicating much more regularly with the city manager's office on the matter until a solution is reached.
