EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A group of kids in Effingham County are changing the community one lap at a time.

In just an hour, 35 YMCA swimmers raised more than $5,000 during their annual swim-a-thon.  In case you're wondering just how many laps they swam, 1,378 to be exact.

Friday, they were honored for their hard work.

The money raised through the swim-a-thon goes towards a Livestrong exercise program tailored for cancer survivors.

"Now we can put 10 cancer survivors through this program because it cost roughly $500 per survivor to participate in our program, said Sarah Puente, Effingham YMCA.

"We're community oriented and this program is proof of that so this community, everybody here this is what its about we're truly blessed, said Matt Phillips, Effingham YMCA.

Saturday, the group will compete against five other YMCA's in our area for the championship title. They've won the past three years.
