TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

It's officially sea turtle hatching season on Tybee Island, and the Tybee Sea Turtle Project announced on Facebook Tuesday the hatching of the first nest of 13 found on the island this season.

The Tybee Sea Turtle Project says the first loggerhead nest hatched a few days ago, per DNR protocol, and they excavated the nest Monday night.

They say six live babies remained in the nest, and volunteers were able to release them towards the water.

Remember, only trained and permitted volunteers may touch turtles, eggs or the nest. Also, it is important to keep your pets off the beach, as well as flashlights. Instead, let your eyes acclimate to the darkness, or use a red filter.

Loggerhead season occurs each year from May to October.

The Tybee Sea Turtle Project is a conservation program of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.
