CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

We are entering the final few hours that Chatham County voters living in the 5th district have to vote for the two candidates on the ballot in the run-off election.

Challenger Tabitha O'Dell snagged more of the voting percentage than incumbent Yusuf Shabazz in the primary election back in May, but not enough for the outright win.

I just got off the phone with the Chatham County Board of Elections Office, and from the few precincts that have checked in throughout the day, they say turnout is low.

Out of the 12 precincts in Chatham County's 5th district, there are three or so busier sites, like the Seed Church, Liberty City Community Center, and Jonesville Baptist, which for example reported about 60 ballots cast earlier Monday.

But keep in mind, this is a Democratic runoff election for the 5th District County Commission spot, held now by Yusuf Shabazz. So not everyone in the district is eligible to vote depending on registration and party affiliation.

Even though we've had an unusually high number of special elections and run-offs already this year, the chair of the Board of Elections says that doesn't mean people should bypass their civic duty.

"I know there has been a lot of races, but there is really nothing we can do about that. It is dictated by law and unfortunately people who have passed, this is our democratic process and it is important to our country and our way of life, this is who we are as Americans,” said Chatham County Board of Elections Chairman Thomas Mahoney III.
