CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Authorities located a missing swimmer in the marsh near the Rodney J. Hall Boat Ramp on Sunday around noon.

The 35-year-old male was out swimming with friends from work, when they lost sight of him in the water when he swam away from the dock.

Chatham Marine Patrol and Aviation were called Saturday night but had to suspend the search until Sunday morning. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard were involved in the search Sunday morning, patrolling the water in boats.

After he was located, he left the scene with officials.

According to a release from the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, the swimmer stated that he decided to spend the night on the marsh and was unaware law enforcement was searching for him.

"He said he was just out on an adventure," said Sergeant Daniel Walker, Chatham County Marine Patrol. "A passerbyer was going by and saw somebody sticking their head up and down bobbing out of the marsh like he was attempting to hide."

This turned out to the reported missing swimmer.

He complied with law enforcement when they confronted him saying he thought his family left him so he decided to stay out on the water for the night.

Sergeant Walker recommends anyone going out on the water to follow a float plan, letting people know where you're going, and for how long.

"A lot of assests and a lot of resources were pulled to try and help this guy who we thought had drowned but just wanted to be avoided," said Sergeant Walker.

In a situation like this everyone was already off duty so they had to call in 2 marine patrol officers, a police officer, a pilot, and this doesn't include DNR or the Coast Guard.

"You have fuel consumptions for the helicopter and the boats and just the man hours it takes to just to go out there and search for someone," said Sergeant Walker.
