TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Things are getting back to normal on Tybee Island after at least a dozen lifeguards called out sick on Sunday.

When we first reported this issue it was just because of short staffing, but the mayor tells me they're investigating to see if it was a planned move.

Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman says everyone showed up so they're not understaffed Monday. But I'm hearing some of those lifeguards may have been let go Monday morning because of the incident.

The mayor tells me they're just trying to figure out what happened but they were never short to the point that it wasn't safe. However, Tybee Island Ocean Rescue must have had some concerns since they were flying red flags Sunday due to those staffing issues.

But again, the mayor doesn't think it was coordinated. They are just trying to get to the bottom of it to make

I've been digging around to get an answer. So far I've reached out to the city manager, the fire chief, as well as the human resources manager.
