A deadly accident shut down a major road and left a lot of questions for investigators. The accident happened right in the middle of rush hour traffic on Highway 21 in Port Wentworth.
Port Wentworth police say around 5:30pm yesterday, a three-wheeled motorcycle going south on Highway 21 turned left in front of a white car. The car smashed into the trike, killing its 19-year-old female passenger and critically injuring the 20-year-old driver.
An ambulance rushed him to Memorial Health for treatment.
Accident investigators closed down the northbound lanes to re-create the scene and gather any evidence that could help them figure out what went wrong. That backed up traffic for at least an hour, stranding many motorists along the highway with nothing to do but pull off the road and wait for the scene to be cleared.
The driver of the car did not get hurt in the accident.
Police have not yet released the names of the victims.
Charges are pending against the motorcycle driver. Investigators still aren't sure if he was attempting some type of emergency maneuver.
They'll continue their investigation today.
