Each year, from May through October, loggerhead sea turtles nest on Tybee Island.

We had the chance Wednesday night to see a nest being excavated and baby turtles making their way to the ocean.

The Tybee Sea Turtle Project excavated nest five Wednesday night with the help of a few locals. They said it began to hatch a few days ago, so Wednesday night was time for inventory.

When excavating, they’re looking to see if any live babies can make their way to the water.

“It’s very important. It’s how we maintain our population and keep up with the data throughout the state. There’s 13 projects along the Georgia coast. It just helps us find out, you know, is our population producing? Are they being successful and having hatched babies and the count hatched versus unhatched eggs allows us to get the data that we need,” said Tammy Smith.

Turtles on Tybee tend to finish nesting around the end of August.

Keep in mind – only DNR permitted individuals can handle these endangered species.
