SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Since 2015, the City of Savannah has worked with a consultant to gather feedback from a parking study in efforts to improve existing parking and transportation mobility in the downtown area.

The city’s team gave a presentation to council during Thursday’s work session showing their research from surveys and public input sessions, and what their recommendations are thus far.

The plan calls for the hiring of a mobility coordinator, increasing bike share stations and creating more routes for easy to use shuttles.

Zones have also been established around downtown. They are meant to enhance and preserve off-street parking for residents and visitors alike. All of it is subject to change as the landscape of the city changes.

“None of this is written in stone. But we want it to be data informed. And so, if we over time start to see in 2016, 2017, hey… it isn’t really all that busy on the street at 8 or 9 a.m., then yeah, maybe we do need to pull back,” said Sean Brandon with the City of Savannah.

Establishing new parking zones and adjusting pricing for days and times will occasionally be tweaked through 2018.
