SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The purchase of the Coastal Empire Fairgrounds up for heated debate at Savannah City Council.

It's one of the largest, mostly vacant portions of land in the urban core of the city, north of Derenne Avenue.

According to Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach, since 2015, they've lost 16 of the 67 available acres to wetlands and landfills, but the seller is still asking for over $3 million.

5th District Alderwoman Estella Shabazz says all of the land can be used, and residents in the area do not want a private entity making the purchase.

In the end, the mayor put in motion to lower the offer to $2 million and that passed with a 5 to 4 vote.

"That would be a good buy for the city if we can get it at the right price. So that was where the amendment came in. So we'll see if they come back,” said District 2 Alderman Bill Durrence.

"The land, even where they found the land that can't be used for building, it surely can be used for recreational purposes,” said Alderwoman Shabazz.

Council has until Friday to officially make an offer. We will keep you updated on the possible purchase of the fairgrounds.
