BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

In Beaufort County, students and teachers are getting ready to head back to school in the next few weeks.

One big change, the district is taking over bus transportation.

They tell us they are ready for the routes and all new bus drivers are hired and trained.

Like any district, they are prepared for a few bumps along the way but say they're expecting a mostly smooth ride.

"We've got 40 new buses. We've put cameras on those. We've put radios on those, so those are ready to go as well. It's been a great process. We're ready to roll on August the 15,” said Director of Transportation Kerry Mayo, Beaufort County schools.

The district tells us it's saving around $900,000 by providing its own transportation instead of outsourcing.

Also new this year, later class times. Elementary schools now starting at 7:45 a.m. and middle and high schools starting at 8:45 a.m.
