Over 2,000 sign up for CEMA notifications

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - A little more than a dozen people manned the emergency operations phones at CEMA to register you, the viewer, for important alerts including missing children, road closures and hurricane emergency notifications.

The latter is why CEMA wanted the WTOC First Alert weather team's help to get the word out.

And the phones rang off the hook at times. More than 2,200 of you Friday signed up for the SwiftReach Alert System.

"We couldn't have done this without the support from the Salvation Army, from our volunteers, from other county departments that came in and assisted us in helping receive these phone calls. We've had 14 lines open all day long. We've been steady all day long and there are people that have called and they weren't able to get through because the lines have been so busy," said CEMA Director Dennis Jones.

For those of you who couldn't get through on the phone, you can now register online by click here.
