NWS: Heavy rains likely in southern Alabama, Georgia

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - The National Weather Service says south Alabama and southwestern Georgia are in for heavy rains that could cause flooding this week.

The problem is a weather system in the big bend area of Florida that's causing storms. As much as 8 inches of rain already has fallen in Florida, and forecasters say the storms will spread west and north and cause heavy rains all week.

The Alabama coast is forecast to receive as much as 11 inches of rain through Thursday, and southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia could get 8 inches of rain.

The weather service says there's a chance of flooding along creeks and rivers, and flash flooding could occur.

The rain may not help the drought situation in either Alabama or Georgia, where northern counties are the driest.
