SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

During the last Savannah City Council meeting, we saw the push from a group of community members for the city to buy the old Coastal Empire Fairgrounds.

In a special-called meeting last Friday, council voted to purchase the 67-acre lot, with plans to build affordable housing and recreational facilities.

Monday, we're hearing from one neighborhood association leader about the city's decision, and asking her what she envisions for the acres of land that border the neighborhood she represents, Feiler Park.

"It's hard to describe what we see. We just see a beautiful place, a beautiful living place. And it will just fit into all the communities and we will all be able to live as one. So really and truly, I can hardly imagine just what it would be, but I'm looking for it to be beautiful,” said Betty Jones, president of the Feiler Park Neighborhood Association.

Jones was one of several neighborhood leaders showing her support at council last week.

Savannah City Council agreed to purchase the property for the price of $2.9 million.
