CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Local health officials met Wednesday to discuss their efforts to keep the community healthy.

The Chatham County Board of Health, including the new District Health Director Dr. Lawton C. Davis, met in the department's building on Eisenhower.

Dr. Lawton spoke about the Zika virus, and the county's efforts to reduce the chances of an outbreak.

Officials say there are some things all of us can do to stop the spread and it starts with controlling the mosquito population.

“What we really want to stress is the importance of taking actions around your home to cut down on the areas where mosquitoes can breed, anything that can collect water around your home please dump those or take them away so they can't collect water where mosquitoes can breed,” said Environmental Health Manager Mike Pitts.

They also advise wearing long sleeves if you can, and using products with DEET.

The next county health meeting is Wednesday, November 9 at 9 a.m.
