SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A local Georgia National Guardsman and college student will be representing the Army National Guard in a big competition next month.

Armstrong State University junior, Specialist Joseph Broam was honored by Georgia Congressman Buddy Carter and the University President Monday after earning the opportunity to represent the National Guard in the 2016 U.S. Army Best Warrior Competition.

This competition measures the physical and mental stamina of the competitors, and Broam beat out nearly 350,000 others.

"Being in a military family, we kind of understand the gravity of this competition and things that it can promote for me as I go on. It re-establishes the fact that this is what I want to do,” said Broam.

Spc. Broam will be heading to Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia at the end of September to represent the Guard in the final competition.
