Hilton Head man charged with felony DUI in crash that killed bicyclist

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina High Patrol are investigating a fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist on the Cross Island Parkway.

According to BCSO, 66-year-old Jeffrey Garske, of Hilton Head Island, was struck by a vehicle around 6 p.m. and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials say 64-year-old Richard Alford, of Hilton Head Island, is charged with felony DUI resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death after he drifted into the shoulder of the Cross Island Parkway near Marshland Road and hit a bicyclist. He then fled the scene. 

Alford is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
