SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

During Monday's news conference at Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department headquarters, leaders with the department said a new unit has been created, specifically to investigate cold cases in the jurisdiction.

The leading lieutenant says the seven part-time investigators are not rookies and join the department with years and years of experience in investigations and forensics.

The new team will look into not only homicides but other crimes that have gone cold over the years.

"We want the community to know that their loved ones cold cases are not forgotten. We constantly think about the cases, we're constantly trying to develop information on those cases. In this unit will allow us those extra resources and the extra expertise and time to dedicate our resources to those cases,” said Lt. David Barefield, new cold case unit commander.

Metro Police Chief Jack Lumpkin emphasized that these are seven additional investigators, and are not being taken away from any area of the department.
