SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A $20 million expansion project at St. Joseph’s is getting one step closer to opening its doors.

On Thursday morning, the last beam of the project was ceremoniously installed. The project is both a 17,000 square foot expansion and the renovation of existing hospital space.

The current emergency department will be expanded by nearly 15,000 square feet – which will give the hospital more treatment rooms.

The CEO of St. Joseph's says this expansion project is important to serve Savannah's expanding south side.

"People won’t have to wait how they used to have to wait. There's a lot more parking than there was in the past, expanded OR’s, expanded registration, so it's just keeping up with the times," CEO Paul P. Hinchey explains.

He says construction is on time and the new facilities will open February of next year.
