GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

Fewer homes are at high risk for flooding in Garden City.

This is according to the newest FEMA flood maps that will go into effect in the fall of next year.

Thursday, the city held an open house to explain the new maps and what it might mean for flood insurance premiums for hundreds of Garden City property owners.

Knowing your risk can help you save your property and family.  And these maps will tell you the best way to do that.

"The one's going in will obviously pick up our flood insurance rates. And the ones going into the green are going to decrease in flood insurance rates,” said Building Safety Director Ron Alexander.

The good news coming out of Thursday’s open house is that many more people are coming out of high risk flooding area than are going into them. That means the over-all need for flood insurance and the cost of premiums in Garden City are going down.
