SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Johnny Harris Restaurant is gone and so may be the development project planned for the site.
The multi-million dollar development, called "The Shoppes at Wicklow Farms," would have held three large retail stores, creating hundreds of jobs.
The plan has not been officially withdrawn by the developer, but based on certain timelines structured into this process, it looks like the multi-million dollar retail development has fallen through.
In February, the Metropolitan Planning Commission approved the development plan for The Shoppes of Wicklow Farms, where Johnny Harris once stood.
The area had already been rezoned to accommodate the plan approved by the city. Then earlier this month, the Johnny Harris building was demolished.
"The project does not seem to go forward. The land was zoned as commercial for this project, and I'm worried that any future project on that site as long as nobody needs variances that can put anything they want in their as long as it meets with the charter," said Alderman Julian Miller. "The city, MPC, and in some cases the developer; there were some things that went wrong there too. Somehow we need to get together, and one misstep shouldn't tank an entire project."
We tried to get official word from the developers to see if the project was indeed over, but our phone calls were not returned.
