Church Fire May Be Arson

Members of a Long County church are trying to find out who would try to destroy their sanctuary. Someone tried to burn down the First Baptist Church, outside Ludowici on Saturday morning.

This is the second time in three years the church has caught on fire. The congregation is still trying to rebuild after the first fire.

Firefighters arrived just before 8:00 a.m. to find the back of the church in flames. The Long County Fire Chief says it looks like someone tried to douse the lumber in gasoline. Firefighters were able to put out the fire in only a few minutes, but not before it caused about $10,000 in damage.

"They're just sick people," explained Long County Fire Chief Darrell Balance, who's also a church member. "It's hard to believe that someone would have it in them to want to destroy a House of God. The thing is, we're trying to help people."

Local officials along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the State Fire Marshall are investigating.
