Driver who Crashed into Varnedoe Bridge Dies

The man who crashed his dump truck into the Sam Varnedoe Bridge has died. James McGowan, who was 76 years old, died Saturday night at Memorial Health University. He had been in critical condition for almost two weeks since the accident.

On April 18th, McGowan broke through the crossing arms on the eastbound side of the drawbridge as it was opening. The impact nearly sheared the roof off the cab of the truck.

Engineers converted the westbound side of the bridge to two lane traffic until the eastbound side of the bridge can be repaired.
