Cory Wilson, a 21-year-old Georgia Southern student and Savannah native, died unexpectedly as a result of a fatal heart arrhythmia in 2013.

Baseball players and fans will gather at L. Scott Stell Park in Savannah over the weekend to honor Wilson at the 4th annual Fireball 40 Memorial Baseball Tournament.

His friends and family organized the tournament years ago to remember Cory and his love of baseball and to raise awareness to his death and help prevent others from suffering as they did.

Cory Wilson was in class at Georgia Southern University when he had a fatal heart attack. Unfortunately, there was not an AED or automated external defibrillator nearby at the time that could have helped save his life.

The two-day event aims to raise money to place AED's in numerous facilities throughout our community.

The opening ceremony for the event will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cory Joseph Wilson scholarship at Georgia Southern University and purchase Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for facilities in need.

Since 2013, the tournament has presented AEDs to the following locations:

Chatham County's Tom Triplett Park, Lake Mayer, Memorial Stadium, Ambuc Park, Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex, and Charlie C. Brooks Park; City of Savannah's Guy Minick and Paulson Complexes, Daffin Park, Grayson Stadium, and L. Scott Stell Park; Garden City's Bazemore Park Baseball Complex; the Habersham School; and Camp Happy Days (for children with cancer).

Admission for the event is $5 per person, but free for children five and under.

Competing team divisions are High School (ages 15-18 years old) and High School Plus for adults 18 and older.
