SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Officials at Savannah's Rape Crisis Center are disappointed with a new state law that's supposed to make sure all backlogged rape kits are processed.

GBI investigators confirming today that 125 rape kits still have not been tested at the state crime lab. State lawmakers changed the law this year, mandating all kits to be turned over to the GBI.

But now the state is trying to process thousands of cases, some that date back more than 10 years.

"Contained within that kit is the life that has been stripped away from our victims and so for that reason, there is not an excuse that anyone can give me for why over 100 kits should still be sitting on the shelves,” said Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire Executive Director Kesha Gibson-Carter.

GBI officials say it's unclear how long it will take them to get all 125 tested.
