Project Heart Safe Hopes to Save Lives

New technology could help save lives in some Low Country schools. The athletic trainer at Hilton Head High School is spearheading an effort to add defibrillators to all the schools in Beaufort County.

Shawn Zink started Project Heart Safe after a Camden High School student died from a heart condition while playing in a basketball tournament at the high school. These defibrillators cost about $2,000 each and are automated to give step-by-step directions.

The six-pound machines could mean the difference between life and death.

"That's the idea," said Zink. "We have 83 of them in all the schools in the hopes we never have to use them."

Thanks to donations, Project Heart Safe was able to buy nine defibrillators. They'll be installing them in each of the high schools this week.
