Some firefighters and teachers are joining forces to help save lives. It's happening in Beaufort and Port Royal. Today Low Country physical education teachers in a number of elementary and middle schools are learning a new program called Risk Watch. It focuses on teaching students prevention, from fire safety to bicycle and and swimming safety.
"We're often the first on scene to emergencies, sometimes involving children, so we hope by implementing this, we'll cut down on that and may save some lives and prevent injuries in the future," said Beaufort fire marshal Dan Byrne.
The Port Royal Fire Department will be buying the program materials, thanks to a federal grant. The schools will begin the program next school year.
