SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Starting Sunday the new rule of no parking on Bay Street in Savannah will go into effect.

The City of Savannah is performing a month-long study on ways to make Bay Street safer for drivers and pedestrians. They hope to make the street safer by changing a few things including widening the lanes and installing a temporary median.

In the lead up to this study, city officials have placed signs along Bay Street and placed flyers on cars so that everyone will be aware that they are not to park on Bay Street starting on Sunday.

"It should be crystal clear to everybody that there is no parking on Bay Street. If your car is there on Sunday, it will be towed. Because we cannot proceed with widening the lanes until all cars are off of Bay Street,” said Brett Bell, with the City of Savannah. "It's a safety issue and it's also is sort of a quality of downtown life issue. It's a very pleasant environment to walk downtown Bay Street right now because of the large number of trucks."

This study will end next month on October 7, and parking will again be allowed on the street.

The city may determine to permanently get rid of parking on Bay Street at a later date.
