Chatham County Sheriff John Wilcher says to maintain the transparency he promised during his campaign for sheriff, he called a news conference Wednesday to address the recent death of an inmate.

Sheriff Wilcher says the 60-year-old inmate was checked out by the Chatham County coroner, and at this time the death is believed to be from natural causes.

Wilcher says the jail staff followed protocol, and that the inmate had just been checked out and cleared by medical staff a week ago.

"If they need care, they're going to get care. If you have a loved one in here and you call and say he's not getting looked at, medical attention, first thing I do is pick up my phone and talk to one of my command staff. And the next thing is they're down there saying bring him to medical,” said Sheriff Wilcher.

This is the first death in the Chatham County Detention Center since Wilcher has been in office.

The investigation into the death has been handed over to the GBI.
