SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Some big housing projects are underway that will offer more affordable housing for families in Savannah.

Funding from multiple local and federal agencies, including the Housing Authority of Savannah, will allow for 72 apartments to be built off Randolph Street across from Fred Wessels Homes. That work is currently underway and expected to be finished and ready for occupancy by early 2017.

Major renovation work will also be done at Fred Wessels as well as Blackshear homes. This is all part of a bigger effort to not only improve living conditions for residents but to also help bolster the availability of affordable housing.

"Our Section 8 waiting list has been closed for the last several years. And our public housing waiting list is closed. So we have some vacancies as they become available, but the number of people who are on the list is so vast that we've closed the waiting list. We're not accepting any new applications,” said Housing Authority of Savannah Executive Director Earline Davis.

Davis says the new housing on Randolph St. won't necessarily put a dent in that waiting list because all the residents who lived there before the old buildings were demolished get dibs on the new apartments.
