Chatham County has more than 60,000 uninsured residents at any given time, and this week is dedicated to helping raise awareness to that problem. It's called Cover the Uninsured Week.
A special news conference today presented some community solutions. Representatives from both Saint Joseph's/Candler and Memorial Health as well as other businesses are working together to build a communitywide safety net plan for the uninsured.
Organizers say it looks like the plan is really coming together. "We've got everyone at the table and for the past year, we've been hammering out a plan to bring to the Chatham County Commission," said Rev. Micheal Elliot of Union Mission. "Both hospitals are there, all working to help the uninsured."
The groups will bring their plans to the Chatham County Commission in the next few months. Right now they're still working out the final details.
