TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

A great turnout Thursday at Tybee Island for Ganesh Visarjan, an annual event to celebrate Hindu God Ganesha.

Visarjan includes 11 days of prayer to Ganesha and on the last one, everyone goes to the ocean to let him loose along with bad karma and sins, in return for successful new activities.

"He stands for prosperity, health, wealth and he's prayed on any ceremony we do in Hindu culture, he's the first one that we kind of pray on,” said Shree Sai Parivar President Pravin “Paul” Patel.

Last year's event brought tragedy, when three celebrators died after drowning. Nearly a dozen people were swept away by the strong rip currents. This year, the group took more safety precautions.
