CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - September is National Preparedness Month, and to make sure you and your family are ready for any kind of disaster, the American Red Cross is asking you to practice fire drills and check smoke detectors in your home.
Since we're still in hurricane season, the executive director of the local Southeast and Coastal Georgia chapter says creating emergency kits is also important and easier than you might think.
"The items that you have may work for a home fire as well as a flood or a tornado, such as duct tape, or gloves or batteries, flashlights, hand-held radios. Those types of things overlap for any kind of disaster," said American Red Cross of Southeast and Coastal Georgia Executive Director Esther Sheppard.
Sheppard says the American Red Cross has several apps for download that have more information for emergency preparedness for a variety of emergencies.
