The City of Savannah took its Operation Clean Sweep to the Southside today. They set up their command center in the Wilshire Estates neighborhood
Operation Clean Sweep is an ongoing program to clean up areas that have been plagued with trash, old cars and weeds. Many of the residents worked over the weekend to get the trash ready for pickup today.
"We're trying to eradicate blight and focus on property maintenance violations, crime," said marketing coordinator Angela Navarro. "The fire department is going door to door doing fire home safety inspections."
The fire department is also providing free blood pressure screenings at the command center.
Since the program began a few months, ago several hundred tons of debris have been hauled away and a lot of old cars have been towed away.
Next week Operation Clean Sweep will set up shop in the Carver Heights neighborhood.
